Schooling for Children of Expats is crucial

The decision on primary childcare of pre-school children will have to be decided by expat parents. Decision that is made by the domestic employee or the day-care centre is very difficult by the addition of factors that occur when the family is abroad. In some countries, it is not common practice for expat parents to decide on this as it is the full-time domestic staff who are employed. Under these circumstances, it becomes difficult for an expat care taker to bring together the group of caregivers because of language barriers or because the caregivers look at the expat to have an altogether different social status.

The availability of day-care facilities varies from one country to another – this includes the quality as well. They are divided into two general categories – one is local and the other is international. Local facilities generally make use of the local language and most of the staff and children are local nationals. Thus, an expat child in such a centre understands and gets rooter in local language and culture. International facilities use English as the medium of language and could be a standard comparable to the best one in North America or Europe. Some staff are also native English speakers although there would also be the local staff also. Local children are also enrolled in such facilities and some of them will also get to be bi-lingual.

Chennai is also rich in international schools as most expat children would be preferred to get educated there. These schools are said to provide quality education in English to children of many nationalities. Chennai, within the broad umberella of international schools are either 'British', 'American', and 'International' curriculum schools. At the elementary and the middle school level, there isn't much to choose in terms of curriculum and teaching style. At high school level, the curriculae vary to a large extent.

International curriculum schools are members of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), based out of Switzerland. The IB school follows all the Primary Years, Middle or Diploma Programs. Many people also offer IGCSE courses (known as the international version of the GCSE exams). The IB Diploma program is a very demanding couse taught in English, French or Spanish although most of them use English. The Local schools are another option for expat children although parents should also consider difficulties arising from that the language of instruction and the content of the curriculum. For children of a younger age, a local school can be a proper way for them to learn the local language.

It is important that expats look at the suitability of the school both at the academic and social level. It is also important to consider where the child will go when they leave the school, and additionally whether the curriculum will enhance the future of the children or hinder it.
